The mountain is yours

Within easy reach of the Chalet Du Lys, there are many varied winter activities which make this area a treat for snow lovers. Skiing, cross country skiing, climbing, ice-skating, off piste skiing, Helicopter skiing are just a few examples.

Skiing & Off Piste Skiing

When you put on your skis and start you’re immediately connected to the three valleys of the Monte Rosa Ski area, Ayas Valley with Champoluc, Antagnod and Brusson, Gressoney Valley with Gressoney-La-Trinité and Gressoney-Saint-Jean, Valsesia with Alagna.

180 km of slopes, catering for all tastes. 32 up-dated ski lifts, chair-lifts and cable-railways, From a minimum level of 1.212 metres above the sea to 3.275 metres at Punta Indren, they carry the skiers to the foot of Monte Rosa.

Gressoney is undoubtedly the place to be for off-piste skiing thanks to its many uncontaminated slopes, extreme descents and breathtaking views.

In fact it is here that they have two, not to be missed, events the “MonterosaSki Rider” and the “Trofeo Mezzalama”: The first is the out of piste competition that includes the best freeriders in the world and the other is a competition of scialpinismo that shows who the best athletes really are, they cross the Mount Rose from Cervinia finishing in Gressoney!

There are many itinerates for those searching for an off piste experience; The Canalino dell’aquila, la Salza, the Valle Perduta, the Piramide Vincent, and the canale la Malfatta are just to name a few.

Helicopter Skiing

Heliskiing is another popular activity given the wide range of high peaks in the area. There’s a wide choice of descents available to suit almost all ability levels. You can also take a helicopter to the top of the Lys mountain pass for a descent along the Grenz glacier down to Zermatt.

Snowboarding

The free riding terrain in the Monte Rosa region is a dream for boarders. The opportunity to open up 2000 metres of vertical above Alagna with a couple of cable car rides up is a truly wonderful thing, and the wide open powder fields all the way down likewise.

There are plenty of off piste boarding and heli-boarding opportunities, but no terrain parks at the last report.

Ice Skating

The skating rink is only minutes away from Gressoney-Saint-Jean’s centre emerssed in the wood over Lake Gover that provides a superb view of the Monte Rosa.

Ski Touring

Ski Touring is about enjoying the beauty of the mountain in its unadulterated atmosphere, without people, lifts or queues. You become in-harmony with the stunning peaceful surroundings and mesmerised with the internal and external calm experienced. Ski touring lets you discover the real nature of the mountains and when you think it couldn’t get better your exhilarated in the long off-piste skiing descent.

Ice Climbing

You can also indulge in cross country skiing or glacier climbing; ease of access, the beauty of the icefalls and the usually favorable conditions make the climbs a popular sport in Gressoney especially during the weekends.
